Halfway through his homecoming trip to Germany, Pope Benedict has paid a courtesy call on its political leaders. He meets later with German Muslims. Benedict met in Cologne today with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder (GEHR'-hahrd SHROH'-dur) and with Angela Merkel. She heads the opposition party and will be running against Schroeder in next month's election. Merkel is a Protestant but says it was a "great joy" to meet the pope, especially a German pope on German soil. Pope Benedict is in Germany for World Youth Day. Four-hundred-thousand young people are among upward of one (m) million people expected for his outdoor Mass tomorrow.
